In the past If you wanted to be a pokemon coordinator, you still had to defeat the gyms to get to certain areas even If you didnt want to. Same thing for breeders. Ther is nothing wrong with what nintendos doing now, It's just repetitive. I'm proposing a World of warcraft type game where you can pick your hometown, choose any first stage pokemon (non-legendary) ...
